Formation

The Townsville and Thuringowa Group was established in 1994 by Larraine Sullivan from Community Health and a small group of men and their wives who were confronted with the problems caused by cancer of the prostate. The group has met monthly since then and has established links with similar groups in Australia and overseas. The group has an impressive collection of books, pamphlets, documents and videos on prostate cancer.

In March 2008 the Townsville and Thuringowa group changed its name to Prostate Cancer Support Group of North Queensland (Townsville) as a result of the amalgamation of Townsville and Thuringowa councils and to better serve the North Queensland region.

Activities

Informative and informal Group meetings are held at 10.00am on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. A Guest Speaker is arranged for meetings where possible. Guest Speakers are drawn from a wide range of the health care profession – doctors, specialist nurses, community health workers, The Cancer Council Queensland, speakers from the field of complementary medicines and commercial providers of specialist aids and equipment.

Men and their partners participate in an informal discussion over a cup of tea/coffee at the meeting.
