Moreton Bay Regional Prostate Cancer Support Group

Meetings at held at 6.00pm on the 2^nd Thursday of each month (except January)

The Moreton Bay Regional Prostate Cancer Support Group began its journey in 2012 at Redcliffe Hospital and has now moved to the Mango Hill Community Centre (The Y.) at 22 Linear Drive, Mango Hill.

This has been done to better service the whole of the Moreton Bay Region which extends West beyond Caboolture and Petrie and also to Bribie Island. The Group is also attracting men from the Northern Suburbs of Brisbane.

The group continues to be indebted to Urologist, Dr Jon-Paul Meyer, the Redcliffe Hospital and the Mayor of the Region, for their assistance during the establishment of the group in 2012 and its development over the past 8 years. However, we now need to look at the best way to service men and their partners from the whole of the region and Mango Hill is central to that as well as being on the M1 highway.

The group now has 190 members and 60 partners and meeting attendance is regularly 25 to 30. The Group attracts speakers on all manner of subjects, not just prostate cancer topics. Urology, radiation oncology, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, hearing, diabetes, incontinence, erectile dysfunction, kidney disease, respiratory ailments, hyperbaric medicine, strokes, and mobility control are just some of the age related talks we have had. We are also concerned with men’s depression brought about by the disease and have had talks from Beyond Blue and others about meditation, grief counselling, cancer research and psychology.

We even step well outside of these disciplines with topical talks like traffic laws, telephone & computer scam control, domestic violence, pharmaceutical needs, wills, canine helpers and My Aged Care.

As always, there is ample opportunity to “bend the ear” of speakers and for men and partners to discuss their problems with those who are travelling along similar treatment journeys.

The Group also has social activities which include coffee meetings, lunches, picnics and excursions to further dispel the depressive nature of the disease and is providing great camaraderie among members and partners. We’ve even had musical items and humorous videos on occasions when speakers do not turn up

Meetings are at held at 6.00pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month except January. Plenty of car parking is available. We have sandwiches, cake, coffee and tea available.

New members need to be there at 6pm to enable us to obtain details of their journey. A lady’s induction officer will help the ladies assimilate with our regular lady members. Attendance is free although a gold coin box is available for persons wishing to help us defray expenses.
