Maribyrnong local Jaz Obradovic has truly gone the distance this September for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month – running an ultra-marathon in one day to raise vital funds for men impacted by the disease.

Last Thursday, Jaz ran 72km from Maribyrnong to Brighton and back again in just eight hours and 16 minutes as part of Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s Long Run campaign.

The Long Run encourages people to run, walk, or wheel 72km throughout September to raise awareness and funds for the 66 Australian men diagnosed with prostate cancer every day.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, Jaz decided to complete the entire distance in one go.

“When I heard that prostate cancer was now the leading cause of prostate cancer in Australia – and just how many men are diagnosed each year, I wanted to do something to give back,” he said.

“Honestly, It was the most difficult challenge I have ever done in my entire life, but every time I felt fatigued, I thought about prostate cancer and how every step helps save lives. This motivated me right until the finish line.

“It was a very special experience for me and I’m so thankful for the support from my community.”

Jaz has raised over $1,600 for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to date. Locals can continue to support his efforts by donating at www.thelongrun.org.au/fundraisers/jazobradovic

Across Australia, over 24,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and around 3,500 men die from the disease each year.

PCFA CEO Anne Savage commended Jaz on his tremendous efforts to make prostate cancer history.

“This September through The Long Run, thousands of Australians like Jaz have helped raise over $1.2 million for vital research, awareness and support services,” Ms Savage said.

“The number of men being diagnosed with prostate cancer is increasing more rapidly than any other type of cancer, and the impact it takes on men’s lives is significant.

“Men with prostate cancer also face a 70 per cent increased risk of suicide death, and 72 per cent of men do not get support for their mental health concerns.

“The Long Run aims to change that through fundraising and awareness. Thank you to everyone who participated to help end the pain of prostate cancer.”
