Prostate cancer usually arises in numerous different places in the prostate gland. So treating localised prostate cancer with surgery or radiotherapy destroys the whole prostate gland. But some men have a single tumour in their prostate. A new surgical technique has been tested in France to treat these men, called a partial prostatectomy. It's hoped that only removing part of the prostate could help preserve continence and potency. Although this would only work for a small sub-group of patients, the results from the first trial are quite promising.
